Optoma DLP Projector Full 3D 1080p SBS: Pros and Cons of Buying One

To find the best 3D projector, we spent a lot of time researching and defining the top features to consider during your purchasing process. Once you know these considerations, you can make a well-informed decision that meets your home entertainment needs. As you start to consider the wide variety of 3D projector options available to you, we recommend restricting your search to options with a minimum of 1080p resolution and at least 3,000 lumens of brightness. Additional features and functionality to consider would be 4K resolution, adjustability options, and low input lag for gaming. The best projector you purchase should also be easy to use and install.

The BenQ TK800 3D DLP projector offers the best overall performance with both 3D and 2D content. The projector has excellent, bright room performance with 3,000 lumens of lamp brightness. This is plenty of brightness for use in rooms with any kind of ambient light. The TK800 projector also offers excellent colors that are vivid and accurate, with 92% Rec. 709 color space. The picture is also incredibly detailed, with both 4K ultra HD resolution and 1080p resolution when in 3D mode. Be aware that you might experience some rainbow effects with this BenQ DLP HD projector, due to its 4K color wheel, but it is minimal overall. Although, you may want to take a look at our BenQ HT3050 3D DLP home theater projector review before ruling out any other BenQ models.

With 3LCD lighting technology, the Epson Home Cinema 3700 creates large displays with extra brightness and vivid colors. This unique three-chip design means the projector is able to match its color brightness to its white brightness, so you get a consistent, even display. Plus, it features proprietary technology called Epson Image Enhancement that sharpens details and refines smoothness in high-action scenes. This is a 1080p 3D projector, but it also features a 4K enhancement to simulate higher resolution by shifting pixels diagonally.

The first point of business for finding the best 3D projector was to find products that offered reliable and cinema-like 3D performance. Ultimately, you want to purchase a projector that invokes the same feelings you got the first time you saw a 3D film in the movie theater. All of the projectors we included on our list feature Active shutter 3D. We awarded bonus points for options that feature accurate colors from a wide color gamut and crisp details via either 4K or 1080p resolution.

The remote will be familiar to anyone who has used an Optoma product before. It is compact but provides one-touch access to most projector functions. There are separate power-on and power-off keys; a nice touch when programming theater control systems. The next set of buttons brings up menus for setting brightness, contrast, gamma, iris, CMS and lamp power. In the center of the wand are the menu controls. On the bottom half are more keys for PureEngine, aspect ratio, and a full set of discrete input selectors. Backlighting is a soft blue and activates when any button is pressed.

As you can see, each of these projectors has its advantages. While the BenQ TH685P has the widest 3D compatibility, all of them will play 3D content in full HD (>>> Find the price on Amazon).

The glasses that were included with the projector come with a USB cable to charge up the battery in the glasses. With the glasses fully charged we were able to get over two hours of straight use. After this two hour point the glasses were still working but it appeared that the glasses were starting to fall out of sync with the RF Emitter. We simply stopped the movie and charged the glasses for 30 minutes and finished watching the movie (we needed an intermission anyway). The 3D glasses were noticeably heavier than standard glasses due to the battery on the temples, but the nose piece was very comfortable even for someone with a wide bridge nose which has been a disappointment with other 3D glasses I have tried up to this point.

The BenQ TH585 is a DLP unit that Benq says can produce 95% of Rec709 due to its RGBW color wheel. The BenQ TH585 has 8 preset picture modes and several delivered good color reproductions out of the box including the CINEMA, LIVING ROOM and two USER modes. Like all BenQ projectors, the TH585 also has a full set of picture calibration adjustments.

If you crave better blacks, you will have to spend several hundred dollars more for a projector like a Benq HT3550 which is rated for triple the dynamic contrast. However, most customers in the market for a projector that sells for under $600 will likely utilize the projector in family rooms or spaces that have higher ambient light which would prevent you from fully appreciating ultra-deep black levels anyway.

Passive glasses are only suitable for Dual projectors setup. For any others setup, Active Shutter glasses are requiered. We recommend the Radio Frequency (RF) Active Shutter glassesas they are universal and work with all display types. If you have a DLP HDTV/projector that supports 100Hz or 120Hz, the DLP-Link Active Shutter glassescan also be used. All glasses work with 3Dfury (However they must be carefully selected for your display) 2ff7e9595c
